Mencey Loco

Aday Morales

The dance piece Mencey Loco tells the story of the last battle of the Canarian aborigines (Guanches) against the Spanish colonizers. Inspired by the album of the same name by Los Sabandeños – which was banned during the Spanish Civil War for its pro-independence message – the piece revives this historical period. The album serves as both the musical foundation and a symbol of the Canarian people’s struggle and resistance. The work also draws parallels with current issues in the Canary Islands, such as the impact of uncontrolled tourism on local culture and the well-being of its inhabitants.

Aday Morales (Tenerife) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ghent, blending hip hop, contemporary dance, and raw storytelling under his crew hArtCore. His work channels gritty his Canarian identity, the love for his family and sharp social critique, aiming to provoke change through visceral movement and lyrics. He is inspired by rap’s rebellion, rock anthems and scifi author Brandon Sanderson’s escapist worlds. He battles in freestyle hip hop circuits, pursues acting and modeling. But his big dream? Retiring to a Canarian farm. For Aday, art is a lifeline: “I create from the struggle, so my family hears my voice and sees our islands rise.”
